HOUSTON -

A toddler was hit and killed by a vehicle while walking in a strip center Friday afternoon in southwest Houston.

It happened in the parking lot of a shopping center on Dashwood near Fondren. Police say the toddler was rushed to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the victim initially left the scene and later returned.  She was released after being questioned. Police say she did not show any signs of intoxication.

No charges have been filed at this time, but police say their investigation is continuing.

The identity of the victim, a 3-year-old boy, is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
