Boy, 12, hits NW Houston woman during joyride

Woman suffers sprained leg, fractured back

HOUSTON – A 12-year-old child who took his parents' car without their permission hit a woman in northwest Houston Saturday, Houston police said.

Police said the boy took his parents' GMC when they wouldn't take him to the store. The boy ended up hitting Elia Ortiz, 32, while she was in her backyard, according to police.

The black GMC broke through the fence around 1 p.m. on Garsee Drive near the Woodland Oaks subdivision of northwest Houston.

According to police, the boy lost control of the wheel and drove completely through the fence and hit Ortiz from behind in the leg and back.

Ortiz's neighbor, Alice Capistran was in her driveway when she heard the crash.

"I started running to see what's happened, and seeing my neighbor laying down on the floor so I went to tell her everything was going to be okay and we called 911," she said.

Ortiz's husband said his wife was transported to Northwest Memorial Hermann Hospital with a fractured back and sprained leg. She was home Saturday night, heavily medicated and in a lot of pain.

Neighbors said once the crash was over, the boy was crying and asking in Spanish for forgiveness, saying the whole thing was an accident.

HPD says the boy will not be charged and the case is being sent to juvenile court.
