Body with gunshot wounds found by joggers at Houston park

HOUSTON – A homicide investigation is underway after a male was found shot to death at a north Houston park.

Houston police said the victim's body was found at around 6:30 a.m. Monday by Aldine MacArthur High School students who were jogging in Keith-Weiss Park in the 12200 block of Aldine Westfield Road.

"They just happened to pass by when it got light enough. They saw the body," said Officer K. McDonald with the Houston Police Department.

The students discovered the body on the northeast side of the park, near Plum Meadow and Orange Grove where residents say they have heard gunfire.

Officer McDonald said, "We have multiple accounts of gunfire but they are at different times and I am told that in the park, this area, there's always gunfire. We'll have to investigate and see if the gunfire that was reported has anything to do with the incident."

Initially, officers said the Aldine ISD Police recognized the victim and identified him as a 17-year-old former student with gang affiliations.  Later, police said this was not necessarily the case.

McDonald said, "At this point in time, there's no indication that he was a gang member so there's no reason to call in the gang squad."

Homicide detectives are still investigating.
