Body found in van outside Fort Bend County grocery store

Many Kroger shoppers say they saw van in area frequently

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas – Fort Bend County investigators are working to identify a body found inside a van outside a busy grocery store Sunday afternoon.

When investigators arrived on the scene at the Kroger in the 11500 block of South Highway 6 and Voss Road, they saw blood dripping from the van.

Many shoppers said they saw the van in the area frequently.

"About three weeks ago my son asked me what was up with the junky van sitting there," shopper Kristin Wallman said. "I thought somebody abandoned it and I thought the sheriffs would pick it up eventually but they never did, so we've been watching to see if it ever moved and it never moved."

Someone called Sunday afternoon to report the vehicle abandoned, spurring the grisly discovery.

Investigators have not released the person's identity, but one shopper told Local 2 she believes the van belongs to a homeless man who was often in this area.

"His van hadn't moved, which I thought was unusual because he's normally at Sonic," Brown said. "He sleeps there at night with his van, he walks with a sign that says, 'Will work for food.'"

The body is now at the Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy to determine cause of death and a positive identification.
