Body discovered in wooded area in southeast Houston, police say

Homicide investigation underway after body discovered

HOUSTON – Marquis Collier was walking home from the bus stop on Thursday when he took a short cut through a field and noticed something out of the ordinary at 12100 Murr Way around 5:45 p.m.

He told police he smelled a foul odor and saw dirty clothing.

"I seen like an object, like a circular object," Marquis Collier said. "I looked at the face and I was like, 'Oh, this is an actual human body.'"

The teen went home and told his mom, and the two of them called 911.

Once on scene, officers found the body of 20-year-old Jedediah Humpherys in advanced decomposition.

"And when they came we took them over there to the park and, sure enough, there was a head on the ground, about five to six feet away was the body tucked in the bushes," Deneese Collier said.

The case is under investigation.

Houston police were trying to determine how long Humpherys' body has been there.

Marquis says from the looks of it -- it's been in that field for awhile.

"It looked like it had been there for some months," Marquis said.

Anyone with information in this case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477).
