Boaters rescued after vessel gets stuck near Rollover Bay

Officials: Pair suffering from sun-exposure, dehydration

GILCHRIST, Texas – Two boaters suffering from severe sun exposure and dehydration were rescued late Monday morning after their 30-foot boat ran aground near Rollover Bay, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

About 11 a.m., a friend of one of the boaters notified Sector Houston-Galveston that the boat was overdue, according to officials. Both a boat crew and an aircrew were dispatched to find the vessel.

About 1 p.m., the boat crew found the craft in shallow waters, and a man and woman - who were standing in ankle-deep water, according to officials. A commercial tow was dispatched to free the beached boat, but weather hindered that effort.

Authorities said that rescuers determined the boaters were showing signs of severe sun exposure and dehydration, and airlifted the couple to Air Station Houston for treatment.
