HOUSTON -

A simple blood test could someday determine if you will still be alive in five years.

Researchers have discovered four different biomarkers which can determine if a person is at a substantially higher risk of dying within a few years.

According to the study published in the journal PLOS Medicine, if your blood registers high levels of four biomarkers, which are biological molecules found in your blood, body fluids, or tissues, you are at a substantially higher risk of dying in the next five years.

Researchers from Finland and Estonia followed more than 17,000 people between the ages of 18 and 103 for the study.

They found the predictors remained unchanged, even after they factored out both genetic predisposition and lifestyle choices such as weight, tobacco and alcohol use.

Medical experts are telling people not to stress over their annual blood test just yet, as more research is needed to understand these biomarkers.
