Bidding snafu halts construction on Fort Bend County school

Calls for bid not properly advertised, officials say

SUGAR LAND, Texas – A recently discovered missed step in the bidding process has halted construction on a new school in Fort Bend County, officials said Tuesday.

Officials at the Fort Bend County Independent School District said that a company has stopped construction on Elementary School 49 in the Harvest Green community after a review discovered that a call for bids on the project was not properly advertised in a newspaper, which is required by law.

However, before the mistake was found a $27 million bid for the project from Drymalla Construction Company had already been accepted, officials said.

“We are disappointed that such a mistake was made, and we are thoroughly investigating this matter to identify how and why the bid package was not advertised,” said FBISD superintendent Charles Dupre.

Officials said they are in the process of executing an expedited procurement process and they hope to have the construction awarded to a company by September.

The school is still scheduled to open in August 2017, officials said.

Officials said they intend to recommend that Drymalla be paid for the work done thus far.
