HOUSTON - The Beren Academy boys basketball team is back in Houston and their return came with a big welcome.
On Sunday, students and family came together and cheered the team's return after Saturday's heartbreaking loss in the state finals in Fort Worth.
The Jewish Orthodox school couldn't pull the win off. The team lost to Abiline Christian in the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools, or TAPPS 2-A state championship game.
Last week, TAPPS rejected Beren Academy's requests to reschedule a semifinals game so players could observe the Sabbath.
A group of parents subsequently sued TAPPS and sought a temporary restraining order requiring the agency to reschedule the game.
The playoff game was eventually rescheduled under threat of the lawsuit.
