Baytown family loses home in fire

Cause of fire under investigation

HOUSTON – A Baytown family is now displaced after their house burned to the ground late Tuesday night.

The fire broke out at around 10:30 p.m. near the intersection of John Martin Road and West Archer Road. Crews say when they arrived they found a large double-wide mobile home completely in flames.

According to firefighters, the area is not incorporated and doesn't have fire hydrants, so Baytown brought in tanker trucks to help put out the flames.

"We got as close as we could. We dumped water on it and that obviously wasn't enough to stop the fire so we called additional help and water from neighboring departments," said Baytown Fire Department Battalion Chief Richard Lopez.

He said fire crews from Crosby and Highlands helped provide water and manpower.

The flames burned the entire home to the ground. There was a family of six home at the time, but the family was outside on a deck when the fire started and no one was injured.

"We tried to put it out, but we didn't have enough water to do anything with it so the best thing we could do was get away from it," said Richard Doucet.

Doucet said he shares the home with two other adults and three of his nephews. They were all left without any belongings or clothes.

"We all have the same clothes on that we had on last night. We don't have any more clothes. They are all in that pile," said Doucet.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital with first- and second-degree burns. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Harris County Fire Marshal.
