HOUSTON – A 12-year-old autistic boy was hit and killed by an alleged drunken driver while walking in the street, according to Houston police.

Police said the family reported Alvester Bowens missing around 5:30 p.m. Saturday when they noticed he was gone.

Two hours later, the boy was walking on S. Post Oak near Main Street on the overpass. Police said he was walking in the street because there were no sidewalks.

Gilberto Aguirre, the suspected drunken driver, hit the boy in the street, Houston police said.

Bowens died at the scene.

Aguirre is charged with DWI. The case is being referred to the Harris County District Attorney's Office for possible charges relating to the boy's death.
