Austin High School student brings loaded gun to campus, HISD says

HOUSTON – An Austin High School student was arrested Monday after being found with a loaded weapon, according to the Houston Independent School District.

School officials said the student was charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon. Authorities said school police found the gun, but it hasn't been released how the officers were tipped off.

"It's real scary," grandparent Consuela Solis said. "I'm scared to come and pick her up sometimes, but in here a lot of things happen."

The school was not placed on lockdown after the gun was discovered, leaving some students surprised after learning about the incident. The school said it plans to call parents Monday evening to notify them about the arrest.

"It's scary to know someone had a gun, and we had no way of knowing. Nobody told us anything — not even an announcement, no shutdown or police, nothing," student Michael Legorreta said.

HISD released a statement saying, "HISD takes these situations very seriously, as the safety of students and staff is always the district's top priority."

The student will also face disciplinary action, the district said.

We will report more information as it becomes available.
