ATASCOCITA – Customers at an Atascocita storage facility continue waiting to get a look at what's left of their belongings after a huge fire.
The fire broke out early Sunday morning at Metro Mini Storage on Upper Lake and Atasca Oaks Drive.
Monday morning, dozens of people returned to the active crime scene hoping to see if anything could be salvaged from the fire. Officials say as many of 100 customers lost property in the fire.
More than 100 firefighters battled this blaze for hours as three buildings burned, along with people's lifelong possessions.
"Twenty years worth of Christmas items, baby clothes and baby books," Toni Tutor said were some of the items she lost in the fire. "Priceless… can't ever get those things back."
Tutor had the personal items here for about six months during a home remodel.
Police say a Benjamin LaChapelle, 19, was arrested and charged with arson.
According investigators, La Chapelle told law enforcement he set the fire for gratification.
"The fire is still smoldering," said Monique Sellers whose items were burned in the fire.
The Harris County Fire Marshal's Office has completed their investigation at the site and has turned the property back over to the owners and managers.
One of the storage facility workers said it would be several days before anyone can get in and to check their belongings. That decision is up to the property owners and managers.
