HOUSTON – An alleged puppy mill in Northeast Houston was shut down after Houston Police and BARC officers received a tip about the breeding facility.
Police said they found 70 dogs on the property. The owner surrendered 40 puppies and adult dogs. Some of them were pregnant, Local 2 reported. Many did not appear malnourished, but some of them had hair, skin and eye issues, investigators said.
"It's hard. It's something we don't like to see," said Ashtyn Ruvet, brand coordinator with BARC.
There were dachshunds, Chihuahuas, Chinese Crested, and poodles.
The case is still under investigation as to whether this was a puppy mill or an animal cruelty case. Meanwhile, BARC workers are doing all they can to care for the animals.
"We're doing everything we can to educate the public on issues that can come up with too many animals on a property," said Ruvet. "It's so important for Houstonians to understand what it means to be a responsible pet owner."
The dogs are currently up for adoption at BARC located at 3200 Carr Street.
