In an announcement on Wednesday, the non-profit organization said it plans to rename the station the Hamilton Brown House and turn it into a temporary home for visiting firefighters who are undergoing treatment for cancer in the Houston Medical Center.

The old building, which opened as Fire Station 27 in 1941 and remained in service until 2002, was designated a historical landmark by City Council in 2005.

Members said they continue to seek the estimated $350,000 to $400,000 in funds to pay not only the renovation cost, but also the taxes due on the property.

The Society of Houston Latino Firefighters, have been working on this "first of its kind" project since 2008.
