A woman was hit and killed as she crossed a southwest Harris County street.

Deputies said Irene Bourgeois, 78, was walking across the 400 block of South Mason Road at Merrymount Drive at 6:30 p.m. Thursday when she was hit by a pickup truck. The driver did not stop, officials said.

Bourgeois died at the scene.

Witnesses said the vehicle, possibly a green Ford F-150, had old damage to the rear of the truck and had a "BROWNING" sticker on the back window.

"She didn't deserve that," neighbor Audra Betancourt said. "Nobody deserves that, to have to suffer like that. How can you hit somebody and just take off? I couldn't even do that to a dog."
