Winter storm moves east after covering West Texas

HOUSTON -

Parts of Interstate 10 in West Texas shut down due to snow have reopened but transportation officials say scattered winter storm closures continue. Southeast Texas was spared from the winter blast.

The Texas Department of Transportation said I-10 in the Anthony and El Paso area reopened early Friday. Sections of I-10 in the Van Horn area, about 110 miles southeast of El Paso, remained closed due to ice and blowing snow that affected visibility.

The El Paso Independent School District delayed the start of classes for two hours Friday.

The National Weather Service says parts of North and Central Texas faced the possibility of light snow Friday.

Sleet did not reach southeast Texas.

"One to 3 inches of snow have fallen in El Paso," KPRC Local 2 meteorologist Khambrel Marshall said. "The warm climate southeast Texas has right now is not conducive to sleet. For the most part, we don't have any rain or sleet, and temperatures are a bit too warm to have sleet."

Temperatures reached 44 degrees Friday morning. Friday's high is forecast for 50 degrees.

Light rain is expected for most of the day.

"We'll get some light sprinkles throughout the day, but that's about it," Marshall said. "We're warmer than we were (Thursday). It will be an overcast type of day with a 30 percent chance of rain and sprinkles."
