HOUSTON -

The Democratic National Convention is in full swing and even though President Barack Obama might not be focusing too hard on winning Texas, that doesn't mean he's not counting on a lot of money from our state.

Local 2 Investigator Joel Eisenbaum discovered some well-known Texans sending millions of dollars to the President and Democrat causes.

In Houston, Republicans have managed to raise three times more money this election cycle than Democrats, according to the website opensecrets.org. This largely mirrors the overall figures statewide.

So far, Republicans have collected approximately $95.6 million while Democrats have collected $37.2 million statewide. Of those funds, Mitt Romney's campaign has directly received $13.5 million in Texas compared to Obama's $7.9 million.

One of the Democratic Party's most prolific donors in Texas is attorney Steve Mostyn, who lives in Houston.

According to public records, Mostyn has donated $1.8 million to Obama's campaign and Democrat causes during the 2012 election cycle.

Opensecrets.org shows only five other people in the country have donated more money than Mostyn to Obama and Democrats.

Measured by both popular vote and electoral votes, the state of Texas has not collectively chosen a Democrat for president since 1976.

Even with the tide clearly working against Democrats in Texas, Obama visited Houston in March to attend at least two fundraisers.  At one exclusive fundraiser, the price of admission was close to $40,000, according to published reports.

"Democrats come here, Republicans come here. Obama comes here. Romney comes here. This is a place where every candidate eventually comes hat in hand," Texas Watchdog Editor Trent Seibert said.

Seibert said he believes that the presence of so many Fortune 500 companies, millionaires and billionaires in Houston make the area irresistible to candidates seeking the presidency.

Notable Texans who have contributed to Obama's campaign, and other Democratic causes, include San Antonio Spurs Coach Greg Popovich, former Dallas Cowboy Emmitt Smith and Beyonce's mother, fashion designer and Houstonian, Tina Knowles. Her contributions total $25,000 so far this election cycle.
