HOUSTON -

Houston-area pediatrician offices are busy as many students get ready to head back to school.

In Pearland, Dr. Suma Manjunath told Local 2's What's Going Around she is seeing children mostly for physicals. She is also discussing weight regulation along with pre-diabetic conditions and high cholesterol.

Eczema, asthma, allergies, and viral rashes, such as hand foot and mouth are also prevalent.

Dr. Helene Sheena with Kelsey-Seybold Fort Bend Medical and Diagnostic Center is seeing scarlet fever and strep throat along with infected bug bites.

Vaccinations should also be on everyone's back to school checklist, according to Dr. Carol Baker, professor of pediatrics with Baylor College of Medicine and director of the Center for Vaccine Awareness and Research at Texas Children's Hospital.

According to Dr. Baker, while the flu is usually on everyone's mind, families also need to be protected from whooping cough, measles, mumps, rubella and meningitis.

She said school-age kids can bring those diseases home, sometimes with serious consequences.

You can check with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the most up-to-date schedule of recommended vaccines.
