HOUSTON -

On the heels of a cold front sweeping through southeast Texas Friday afternoon, cold air once again settles into the area and promises another light freeze for both Saturday and Sunday mornings.

Temperatures will below freezing north and west of Houston shortly after midnight both nights, bottoming out in the upper 20s in most places by dawn.

The freeze could damage delicate plants, so watering and covering them (or bringing potted plants into garages or homes) are good safeguards.

With plenty of sunshine on Saturday, high temperatures will rebound into the low 50s -- still chilly for Houston this time of year!  You'll likely need a jacket even at the warmest part of the day.

By Sunday we'll begin to see a return flow off the Gulf of Mexico, so low-level moisture will be on the rise.  A stream of Pacific moisture will move in aloft, too.  The combined moisture influx will quickly bring cloudy skies to the area by afternoon at the latest.  Highs on Sunday will be in the mid 50s.

By Monday, all the moisture building up in the atmosphere will translate to rainfall just as New Year's Eve revelers begin their festivities.
