Vandals slash tires, steal car batteries
More than a dozen residents at a southeast Houston apartment complex woke up Wednesday to find their vehicles vandalized.
Houston police said thieves targeted the Atlas apartments on Broadway near Rockhill.
Detectives said many tires were slashed and the batteries were cut out of some vehicles.
"It's no good that people working for good cars … other people come and no good," said Sergio Martinez.
Martinez discovered he had four flats. He said he didn't have any way to get to work or take his son to school.
"This is ridiculous," resident Martha Babers said. "You have to come home and spend extra money at Christmastime for something ridiculous like this."
Babers said she is battling lung cancer and can't work. Replacing her battery and tires will be a huge expense.
"We do have kids. We are sick. We wouldn't be living in a place like this if we had money. Please let us have a good Christmas. We really do need a good Christmas," Babers said.
Managers said the complex recently changed owners and that steps are being taken to improve security.
Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
