A Houston judge has sentenced the transgender widow of a fallen firefighter to almost two months in jail after she pleaded guilty to theft involving a wristwatch.
Nikki Araguz was sentenced to 50 days in jail Wednesday after she confessed to stealing the Rolex off the wrist of a woman she met at a Houston bar Feb. 24. Her attorney said Araguz has already paid $2,800 in restitution for the watch.
She's waging a court fight for the death benefits of firefighter Thomas Araguz III, who died in July 2010 while battling a fire near Wharton. The 36-year-old widow, born Justin Graham Purdue, is appealing a Wharton County judge's ruling that her marriage was invalid because she was born a man and Texas doesn't recognize same-sex marriages.
