Traffic alert: Freeway ramp to close for several days
Katy Freeway westbound ramp to North Freeway northbound closes at 9 p.m. Friday
Part of a busy freeway interchange will be closed for more than a week to undergo repairs.
The Katy Freeway westbound connector ramp to the North Freeway northbound will close at 9 p.m. Friday. It will not reopen until 5 a.m. Feb. 20.
Texas Department of Transportation officials said the connector ramp has moved slightly out of place, and it needs to make repairs to prevent future problems.
"Over the 40 years of the life of this bridge, we've experienced numerous contraction and expansion cycles due to the heat of the summer and (the cold) of the winter," said Quincy Allen, TxDOT Houston District director of maintenance. "The expansion and contraction have allowed, over time, the span of the bridge to rotate. The rotation wasn't as pronounced at first, but now it's getting to the point where we need to make repairs."
During the closure, traffic on the Katy Freeway westbound to the North Freeway northbound will be detoured to the Heights Boulevard exit. Drivers should make a left a Heights Boulevard, make a left onto the Katy Freeway eastbound feeder road and enter the freeway to access the North Freeway northbound.
The Travis Street connector ramp to the North Freeway will also be closed 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Feb. 20.
