GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — A Texas man who molested two of his girlfriend's children has been sentenced to 65 years in prison after rejecting a plea deal to serve 15 years behind bars.
A jury in Galveston on Tuesday sentenced 29-year-old Tyrece Lynn Cox. Cox on Monday pleaded guilty to continuous sexual abuse of the children and opted to let jurors decide the penalty.
The Galveston County Daily News reports defense attorney Calvin Jackson says Cox was apparently overcome by guilt when he turned down the sentencing plea deal.
Prosecutors say Cox was indicted on charges that he abused two children but evidence indicated as many as four girls — ages 4 through 8 — allegedly were molested. The incidents happened since 2010 at a house in Galveston and an apartment in Webster.
