Texas lawyer acquitted of public corruption count in judge bribery, other convictions affirmed

BROWNSVILLE, Texas -

An attorney has been acquitted of one public corruption count but his conviction on six other charges for bribing a Texas judge will stand.

A federal judge in Brownsville on Thursday is scheduled to sentence Ray Marchan of Port Isabel.

U. S. District Judge Andrew Hanen on Monday overturned a jury's verdict that found Marchan guilty of mail fraud in the Judge Abel Limas corruption case. Libel, who failed in his 2008 re-election bid, awaits sentencing on federal racketeering charges.

The Valley Morning Star reports Hanen upheld Marchan's June conviction on six counts, including racketeering, conspiracy to commit racketeering, three counts of aiding and abetting extortion, plus a second count of mail fraud.

Marchan faces a maximum 20 years in prison per count. He's free on bond pending sentencing.
