SAN ANTONIO -

The Texas Historical Commission will help pay to demolish a windowless, granite addition to an 1890s courthouse in San Antonio.

The commission has awarded Bexar County a $2.5 million grant toward demolishing the 1970s-era Gondeck Addition to the historic Bexar County Courthouse. The county has set aside more than $5 million to complete the project, possibly by 2014.

County Judge Nelson Wolff on Wednesday described the addition as an eyesore.

The complex, named for architect Edward Gondeck, was meant as a temporary addition to provide work space. Critics have complained about its look. More than half of the staff has relocated from the addition.

A courthouse restoration master plan, approved in 2000 by the Texas Historical Commission, included the Gondeck Addition demolition.
