HOUSTON -

Deputies said a girl's sweet 16 birthday party ended with her family member shot to death in the driveway Sunday morning.

The deadly encounter happened around 12:30 a.m. at a home on Lauder and Korenek in northwest Harris County.

Investigators with the Harris County Sheriff's Office said they got a disturbance call for shots fired.

"Patrol units arrived on scene and found a Hispanic male lying in the driveway of the residence where the party was being held," said Felipe Rivera with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Rivera said there was a fight during the party, and several young men were asked to leave the party.

As they were leaving the party, a physical altercation started between the young men and the birthday girl's 27-year-old relative, Edgar Garcia, officials said.

Garcia eventually ran the young men off, but they returned with a gun, according to investigators. One of the teens confronted Garcia and started shooting, investigators said. Garcia was hit in the face and died at the scene.

Rivera said parents who arrived to pick up their children were upset.

"There's a lot of concerned parents out here, obviously. The juveniles appear to be shaken up," Rivera said.

Deputies were looking for the suspect or suspects.
