Teen claims she killed dad because of abuse
12-year-old killed dad in Katy in 2009
Teen on trial in dad's death
The trial of a teenager accused of killing her father was expected to go to a jury soon.
Attorneys for the now 15-year-old girl are hoping for a not guilty verdict. Prosecutors want a guilty verdict and are asking for 40 years in prison.
The girl was 12 years old when she shot her father while he was asleep.
Courtroom testimony revealed a very scared girl. In 2009, when she shot her father in their Katy home, she apparently did not tell investigators or the Texas Rangers the full story.
The girl was interviewed by two male Katy police officers at the scene about an hour after the shooting. They asked her if she had been abused. The girl said no. She was interviewed again about three hours later and again made no outcry of abuse.
Instead, according to testimony in the trial that has lasted more than three weeks, she said the two argued and struggled for the gun when it went off. She stuck with that story for several hours after her father's death.
But soon a dark secret was revealed.
The girl, the defense claims, snapped after years of physical and sexual abuse by the hands of her own father. The girl told investigators it all started when she was 6 years old.
Dr. George Glass, a psychiatrist and expert witness for the defense, testified it's not uncommon for a child to lie about physical and sexual abuse.
