Teacher accused of sex with student after 900 text messages

HOUSTON -

An east Houston school teacher was charged with a felony after police said he had sex with an 11th grade student.

Ajay Kumar Mangal, 24, of Pascagoula, Miss., has been charged with improper relationship with a student.  Once he is booked into jail, his bail will be set at $30,000, according to an arrest warrant affidavit filed by Houston police.

Police said Mangal was a teacher at East End High School, part of the YES Prep public school system. He's accused of taking a liking to the 11th grade female after he spotted her dancing at another teacher's going away party.

The 11th grader's mother told police that Mangal picked the child up on Sept.16 and drove her to his apartment on Brompton off North Braeswood near the Meyerland area of southwest Houston.

The police arrest warrant affidavit said the teacher first took the girl to eat at McDonalds and the two began kissing when he took her back to his apartment.   Police said he realized he didn't have a condom, so he took the girl with him as he went to buy them.

The girl was 16 years old at the time, according to police.

Court records show the child's mother spotted Mangal bringing her daughter back home after 11 p.m. that night and when she approached the car, he didn't say a word to the mom and he drove away.

The mother provided the child's phone to police and officers wrote in court papers that Mangal traded 900 text messages with the girl in the short time span between Sept. 8 and Sept. 17, around the same time as the sexual encounter.

No one answered the door at Mangal's apartment Wednesday and he could not be located for comment.  An arrest warrant is out for him, according to court records.

In a statement, a YES Prep representative wrote:

"Allegations were made that a teacher had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a student. As soon as we learned of the allegations, we immediately placed the teacher on administrative leave and began our own investigation. The teacher resigned from YES Prep during the course of the investigation. Charges have been filed against the teacher and we have been cooperating fully with both the police and state officials.

"Due to privacy concerns, we are not in a position to share any more details about the specific allegations. However, we want you to know that we take very seriously any concerns that relate to the well-being of each of our students and our first priority is to the safety and education of your children."

Mangal had a valid Texas Education Agency certification to be a teacher, which took effect June 1, 2011.

If he's found guilty of the felony crime, he could get a prison sentence and the permanent loss of his teaching credentials.
