HOUSTON -

A teacher is accused of sending harassing emails and Facebook messages to a state representative.

State Rep. Carol Alvarado asked Houston police to investigate after she said someone she has known for 10 years sent her disturbing images and messages.

"Electronic communication and social media have revolutionized the way we interact with one another. Today I find myself in a distressing situation in which I am the victim of the unintended consequences of these technological breakthroughs," Alvarado said in a statement.

In the statement, Alvarado said some of the messages were violent.

"I believe this individual is in need of help, and I am positive that our criminal justice system will rehabilitate him and set him back on the right path," the statement read.

Jesse J. Alred, 50, has been accused of sending the messages and was charged with harassing communication.

Alvarado said Alred, a teacher at Milby High School, was an acquaintance of hers for 10 years.

During the investigation, Alvarado got Alred to call her and, according to police, she taped him admitting to sending the disturbing messages.
