Suspect in officer's slaying appears in court
Harlem Lewis III denied bond
A man accused of killing a Bellaire police officer and a business owner faced a judge for the first time Wednesday.
Harlem Lewis III has been charged with two counts of capital murder. Investigators said he shot and killed Sgt. Jimmie Norman and innocent bystander, Terry Taylor, at the end of a chase on Christmas Eve.
Norman, a 23-year veteran of the police force, was the first Bellaire police officer killed in the line of duty, officials said.
Bellaire police officers escorted Norman's family to court. In court, Lewis heard the charges and the evidence against him.
The district attorney has not yet made a decision on whether to seek the death penalty.
Lewis remains in jail with no bond. He'll be back in court in March.
