Suspected drunk driver's wreck leads to gas leak
Gas leak closes FM 2094 in League City
Gas leak closes street for hours
A suspected drunk driver slammed into a utility pole, which led to a gas leak that shut down a major League City street for hours Friday.
League City police said it all started when Miguel Hinojosa plowed into the pole at 9:45 p.m. Thursday.
A construction crew working on the downed telephone pole hit the gas line at the Fairways Apartments on FM 2094 around 4 a.m.
"An intoxicated driver struck a utility pole in front of an apartment complex. When Texas-New Mexico Power Company came out to do the work, they actually ruptured a gas line," said Tamara Spencer with the League City Police Department. "They thought it would be fixed by 8 a.m., but they (were) waiting on parts."
FM 2094 was closed from Twin Oaks to Enterprise until crews capped the leak shortly after 9:30 a.m.
There were no mandatory evacuations or shelter-in-place ordered.
Residents in the area were advised to leave early for work and school because traffic would be backed up.
"This is one of our main arteries, so we're asking residents to take an alternate route," Spencer said.
"It makes me nervous, honestly -- lots of bad things can happen. You can probably blow up, too. There's a lot of kids in this building," said Mandy Graves, who lives feet away from the gas leak.
"The fire department is taking readings to verify that the gas is not in the air and that it is not at an unsafe level," Spencer said.
No one was injured.
