Sharpstown High School wins theatre funding
New musical theatre program at Sharpstown High School is being funded by NBC.
Sharpstown High School is getting a new musical theatre program.
NBC and I-Theatrics teamed up with Theatre Under the Stars in Houston to build a musical theatre program at the school.
Theatre program director Julio Morales told Local 2, "A musical theatre program is just a nice addition to our fine arts department, especially for those who are interested in being performers, actors or singers."
Sharpstown is just one of 20 schools across the country chosen to benefit from NBC's Smash Make a Musical program.
Marty Johnson from I-Theatrics said, "Sharpstown has a great band program and a new theatre program, so they have an art sensibility in this school. Bringing their band program and their theatre program together to be musical theatre was just a natural fit."
The students will be taught the finer points of performing and be given the tools needed to put on a successful show.
Sharpstown student Rene Hernandez said this is a dream come true.
"I never really thought I would be in a musical, or be part of a musical, so it's very exciting for me", said Hernandez.
The school's first musical will hit the stage in May.
