Settlement could end red light cams fight
ATF, city to cancel contract
A settlement could finally put an end to the fight over red light cameras in Houston.
In the agreement, the city would pay American Traffic Solutions, the company that installed the cameras, nearly $4.8 million to cancel the contract between the two sides.
In a statement, Mayor Annise Parker said the funds to pay for the settlement will come from previously collected fines that are in escrow and from the $25 million still owed to the city in outstanding red light fines.
"I am thankful that traffic violators, not Houston taxpayers, will be paying for this," Parker said, according to the statement.
In exchange for the payments, ATS has agreed to end its legal fight with the city and remove all the cameras from Houston intersections.
The settlement must be agreed upon by the city council.
