SPRING, Texas -

A middle school canceled classes Wednesday because of a power outage.

Spring Independent School District officials said a damaged transformer caused the power outage at Dueitt Middle School, 1 Eagle Crossing.

The school district said parents were encouraged to pick up their students from the school, but parents will need to go inside and sign their children out.

Officials said a fire alarm went off before school began because of smoke caused by air-conditioning equipment that overheated when the transformer was damaged. Students and staff who were already at school were evacuated and students who arrived at school after that were kept outside until it was deemed safe to go inside.

School district officials said power was restored Wednesday afternoon and classes will be held as scheduled on Thursday.
