A San Antonio firefighter was injured after falling off a ladder as he tried to rescue a resident on a balcony during a fire at a condominium complex.
The San Antonio Express-News reports the firefighter fell about 20 feet Thursday afternoon. Fire Chief Charles Hood says, "Somehow in that rescue, a firefighter lost his balance."
The elderly man trapped on the balcony was eventually rescued, along with his dog. He was taken to the hospital where he was treated for smoke inhalation.
The injured firefighter was taken to the hospital with broken bones. Deborah Foster, a fire department spokeswoman, says the firefighter remained in the hospital in stable condition Friday morning.
The fire, which was mainly contained to the third floor, destroyed 27 units in the building.
