Restaurant Report For Nov. 3: Roaches & Flies
From pizza to Mexican, fast food to an upscale River Oaks restaurant, we've got you covered in this week's Restaurant Report Card.
KPRC Local 2 consumer investigator Amy Davis is making the rounds, stopping by restaurants with the best and worst health inspections this week.
"Pho" is a kind of noodle made from rice, but at Pho 24 Café, 9750 Bellaire Blvd., it wasn't the noodles that made health inspectors' notes. It was the cockroaches. They wrote that they observed roaches on the wall by the meat slicer.
Pho 24 Café manager Giao Nguyen gave KPRC Local 2 an impromptu tour when we stopped by and even showed us the meat slicer mentioned in the report. We didn't see any roaches. Nguyen said it's because she now has the kitchen treated nightly.
"I don't want my customers to see that," said Nguyen. "I'm very sorry."
But maybe not as sorry as you'd be if you'd just ate at Wendy's at 5916 Richmond Ave. and then discovered that inspectors said they saw several roaches in the kitchen.
At Pink's Pizza at 710 West Gray, inspectors told employees to relocate hanging flying insect traps to protect clean equipment from contamination.
They might need some of those traps at Don Jose, 5305 Antoine, because inspectors said they saw fly activity in the cook line.
A roach crawling on the wall at Jackie's Kitchen, 2210 Mangum, got the restaurant written up.
At Cafe Ginger at 1952 West Gray, inspectors said an employee was handling raw beef and vegetables without washing his hands.
We never like to leave you with a bad taste in your mouth. Inspectors gave great scores to Antonio's Flying Pizza in the 2900 block of Hillcroft and the Mongolian Hot Pot in the 5900 block of Westheimer. That's why we give them both A's.
The health inspectors' findings at your favorite restaurant shouldn't be a surprise. In fact, a city ordinance requires every restaurant post its most recent health inspection somewhere inside the restaurant. That could be in the kitchen. If you want to see it, just ask.
