A high-end grocery store gets low marks and a popular diner has more than pie behind the counter: It's what we're serving up in this week's Restaurant Report Card.
Hu's Garden at 9905 South Post Oak is a longtime favorite for Chinese fare. We found customers raving online. One wrote, "Everything on the menu is delicious." Someone else posted, "Great family restaurant for generous portions of tasty Chinese food." But health inspectors' reviews weren't so glowing. They wrote that the manager could not find soap for employees in the kitchen to wash their hands and they saw chicken in a bowl on the floor in the food prep area.
When consumer investigator Amy Davis stopped by the restaurant, the owner told her that he never saw the bowl on the floor, but when the inspector told him about it, he spoke with the employee who put it there to tell them it was not unacceptable. As for the soap, he said when the pump was empty the day the inspector was there, someone threw the bottle away instead of refilling it.
The comfort food from 59 Diner at 3801 Farnham is less comforting when you hear inspectors said they found two live roaches in the kitchen.
Apparently roaches like the healthy fare at Whole Foods, too. Inspectors said they found one live roach in the bakery at the store on Kirby.
There were multiple roaches in the food prep area at Jimmy Wok at 2268 West Holcombe and no hot water.
Inspectors said they found rat feces in the kitchen of Golden Hunan at 2953 Bingle.
It's all clean at Jumma Food Sushi at 1302 Blalock and Brasserie Max & Julie at 4315 Montrose. Both restaurants earn A's in this week's Restaurant Report Card.
