Bugs in the sugar and meat five days past expiration -- it's what's on the menu in this week's Restaurant Report Card.

Playa el Cuco, 436 East Crosstimbers, is a health inspector hot spot. They dropped by the Mexican restaurant five times last year and tossed 52 pounds of food left sitting out overnight. On their most recent visit, inspectors said the flies and gnats were so out of control in the kitchen, they had to close the place. KPRC Local 2 wanted to check out the sugar container where inspectors said they saw bugs crawling around, but the owners refused to let a crew take a look in the kitchen.

It was old meat that worried inspectors when they stopped by the Chili's at 12897 Gulf Freeway. They said the meat was prepared or opened on April 8 and marked with an April 13 expiration date. Inspections found it still hanging around five days after that on April 18.

At Thai Village at 2512 Times Boulevard in Rice Village, inspectors said they found two live roaches in the restaurant.

There was one roach at the entrance to the kitchen at the I-Ping Bakery at 9888 Bellaire.

There were flies buzzing around the utensil cleaning area at Denny's at 2316 Southmore.

There were some spotless inspections.

You can scarf down all the popcorn and hot dogs you want at the Edwards Theater on Weslayan at Richmond. Inspectors found no violations at the movie theater's concession stands.

Go upscale and have a bite at America's at 1800 Post Oak.

You don't have to spend a lot to have it your way and have it clean it, too. Burger King at 9603 Bissonnet also earned an A+ this week.
