Residents Worry About Apartment Complex Crime
Residents at a southeast Houston apartment complex are on edge after a crime that, police said, involved two men forcing their way into a mother and daughter's home, pistol-whipping them and taking off with their valuables.
"More needs to be done," said a woman whose apartment was burglarized three months ago.
The woman has asked not be identified because she's fearful and she's frustrated.
"As a single mom, I was concerned for my children and my safety," said the woman.
The single mother of three said the staff at the Park Avenue luxury apartment complex off Pearland Parkway did not do enough to make her feel like she and her family were protected after their apartment was burglarized.
"There is no security. The one guy that's there, never gets out of his car," she added.
The woman said she was so scared that she decided to break her lease, move out and move on.
Then, after KPRC Local 2 reported Wednesday about a mother and daughter who were pistol-whipped during a violent home robbery, she decided to speak out.
"I was completely shocked, especially after I had been talking to people and realized there had been so many things that had happened that we as residents weren't aware of," the woman said.
According to the Houston Police Department, officers have been called out to the complex 65 times since February. Of those calls, 21 were reporting burglaries.
KPRC Local 2 paid a visit to the person in charge of the complex to try to get some answers, but instead, reporter Nefertiti Jaquez was pushed aside after the property manager threatened to have her and her photographer arrested.
Many residents said they just want the staff at the complex to warn them when they should be on alert.
"The place where you need to feel safe is at your home," the woman said.
