Quick-thinking mom scares off burglars
Mom grabs gun, scares off burglars
A mother grabs her gun to scares off men trying to burglarizing her home, investigators said.
Harris County Precinct 3 deputy constables said two men broke into the garage of a home in the 28500 block of Yonder Way in Huffman about 7:30 a.m. and piled up some of the residents' belongings.
A mother and her 10-year-old were home and heard glass breaking and people talking. The mother took her son to a closet to call for help while she grabbed a rifle and confronted one of the thieves.
"Here I am with a rifle in my hand, just standing there," said the mother, who requested not to be identified. "Thankfully, I'm short, so I don't know if he just didn't see me over the bar."
The mother said a man was standing on her a fireplace and trying to figure out how to take a TV down.
"I have the gun pointed at him and he stepped down," she said. "He stepped back up, and when he did -- I didn't know there was another man in the house -- but I heard someone say, 'Hey, she has a gun.'"
The woman ended up firing a shot, which hit a candle.
"It was very scary," said the 10-year-old boy. "It was horrifying, actually. When she shot the gun, it made me even (more scared) because I was afraid that she got shot instead of her shooting."
The family has two dogs. One is large and may have been lured into a powder room with treats. The other one weighs about 7 pounds and was found inside the family's closed washing machine.
The men got away, but investigators said they don't think got away with anything.
Descriptions of the men have not been released.
