HOUSTON -

A father accused of stabbing his family, killing his 8-month-old daughter, appeared in court Monday and prosecutors said an affair was the motive for the attack.

Jose Pedro Rojas-Martinez, 23, has been charged with capital murder. He is accused in the fatal stabbing shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday at 10810 Telephone Road and Fuqua in southeast Houston. Authorities said the father stabbed his 19-year-old wife, Erica Rojas, their 2-year-old son and 8-month-old daughter. The baby died from her wounds, police said.

The mother and son were transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital. Investigators said both would survive. The boy was listed in stable condition.

In court Monday, Rojas-Martinez cried uncontrollably before the judge. He had a white bandage on his neck from where he tried to kill himself, police said.

Prosecutors said Rojas-Martinez went into a rage when he found his wife with another man.

"The defendant apparently came home. He believed his wife was cheating on him. He got into a fight with the guy. He left and the woman intervened," prosecutor Colleen Barnett said. "He took two knives out of the kitchen, stabbed her multiple times, went into the children's room, got out the little boy and girl, and stabbed them."

According to court documents, Rojas-Martinez repeatedly stabbed his 2-year-old son in the chest and then stabbed his baby daughter.

"When officers were finally able to go into the trailer, the wife was lying on top of the small children that were underneath her," Barnett said.

Rojas-Martinez then put the knife to his throat. He sustained minor wounds.

Rojas-Martinez is being held in the Harris County Jail without bond.
