The family of Jose Hernandez, whose body was found outside a Pasadena apartment complex on Friday, is hoping police find his killers.
“We had this really bad feeling that something was wrong,” said Cecelia Hernandez.
Hernandez said a homicide detective stopped by her family's home over the weekend to confirm Jose Hernandez, 44, her missing brother-in-law, was murdered.
“He never looked for trouble. He never wanted to hurt nobody,” said Hernandez.
Jose Hernandez, a construction worker, lived with his mother in order to help care for her.
The victim's family said Monday he was headed to a store to pick up some cigarettes about a block away from his apartment. But he never made it back home. His mother was the last person to see him.
“He told his mother, ‘I’ll be back.’ But nobody ever saw him again,” said Cecelia Hernandez.
Relatives say with no sign of Hernandez two days later, they filed a missing persons report with the Houston Police Department.
On Friday, the family saw Local 2’s report of body found near a trash container inside a gated Pasadena apartment complex. Cecelia said she had a gut feeling.
“At that moment, we knew that it was him,” Cecelia said.
Police said they received an anonymous call about 11 a.m. Friday from someone saying they had spotted something suspicious wrapped in plastic and left beside a dumpster. Sources told Local 2 the remains were covered in canvas before being wrapped in a blue tarp.
On Saturday, an autopsy revealed the victim was Jose Hernandez. Sources said he suffered injuries to his head and was stabbed to death. Now, as the family prepares to bury Hernandez over the weekend, they are left wondering who would want to do this and why.
“He was the sweetest man in the world. He always had a smile,” said Cecelia.
