Police: Woman tries to abduct baby at grocery store
A 51-year-old woman was arrested and charged with attempted kidnapping after League City police said she tried to take a 1-year-old baby boy right out of his mother's arms. Melany James is being held on a $20,000 bond.
Investigators said the incident happened in the Kroger parking lot in the 200 block of South FM 270 in League City. Police were called to the scene at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday. They said a mother was sitting in the front seat of her car, waiting for her husband to come out of the store, and she had her 1-year-old son on her lap. The windows were down when James walked up.
"She tried to grab the baby," said Kristi Wyatt, Director of Communications for League City.
Wyatt said the mother had the windows down and was frantically trying to roll them up and lock the doors. A witness who was leaving the Kroger store happened to see what was going on and ran to help. Police said that woman held the suspect down until police arrived and made the arrest.
"Obviously it's a scary situation," said Wyatt. "We're in an area where this sort of thing doesn't happen."
The little boy wasn't hurt during the incident, the mother received some scratches but is going to be OK.
