Police: Thieves swipe jewelry at pawn shop
Cash America in Baytown robbed Friday
Three suspects are in custody, accused in a smash-and-grab robbery worth thousands of dollars.
Baytown police said the crime happened around 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Cash America in the 4400 block of Decker Drive.
Officials said two employees were busy helping customers at the time of the robbery. Surveillance cameras caught the crooks in action as they carried out the heist.
Investigators said one of the crooks used a hammer to smash the jewelry case while another grabbed more than 100 pieces of gold jewelry worth around $13,000. All the stunned employees and customers could do was keep their backs turned.
Police said a third suspect waiting in a car outside helped them with their getaway, but they were all arrested a short time later.
"The vehicle was abandoned in the 800 block of Rosewick in Houston," said Detective Brian Parker with the Baytown Police Department. "The suspects had fled from the vehicle and were basically on foot whenever they were later apprehended."
Investigators were questioning the suspects at police headquarters in hopes of finding out whether they may be connected to other similar crimes in the area. Police are still working to track down the stolen jewelry.
