Police: Thief steals church's air conditioner
New Guide Missionary Baptist Church burglarized
A thief has stolen copper from an air conditioning unit at a church in southeast Houston, according to police.
The congregation at New Guide Missionary Baptist Church, 3521 Dennis Street in Third Ward, is looking for a way to pay for the damage done by the crook.
Pastor Joe Hubbard and members said their first priority is taking care of the community, but on Oct. 14, they were stunned to find out that someone stole one of the church's air conditioners.
"At first I thought they were trying to break into the house next to the church," said Lou Ella Frazier, a church member.
Frazier said she lives down the street and heard the commotion.
By the time Hubbard arrived, police where there but the thief and air conditioner were not.
He said police told him the unit was probably taken for copper.
"We're not angry, just disappointed," he said. "I would say the Lord loves him and we love him, too."
While members said they can forgive, reality is also setting in. The church doesn't have the estimated $1,300 to replace the unit and repair the window. That means services on Sunday will be hot and unbearable.
On Friday, the church will sponsor a barbecue and fish fry to raise money.
They said everyone, even the thief, is invited. Church members said they hope the thief will want to do the right thing and at least apologize for the problems he's created.
