Police: Mom confesses to killing 5-year-old
HPD: Mom kills daughter, 5, in apartment
A mother has confessed to killing her 5-year-old daughter inside a southwest Houston apartment, detectives said.
Houston police were called to the Pier Club apartment complex, 9950 Club Creek Drive near Woodfair Drive, shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday.
Candy Flores was found dead on the floor of her bedroom. Emergency crews said she was "unresponsive" when they arrived.
Police said the mother and Candy's older sister told police that Candy fell from a bathroom toilet on to a tile floor, which caused her death.
Homicide officers ruled the death as "questionable" after they said they found injuries on her body. Detectives said the information the mother, Rosa Gonzalez, 41, gave was inconsistent with the injuries found on Candy's body.
Gonzalez was questioned for several hours and her story kept changing, detectives said. She confessed to beating Candy then slamming her head on something in the bathroom, police said. Detectives said the final blow killed Candy.
The motive for the killing has not been released.
Detectives said that Candy was very malnourished that she looked like a 3-year-old.
According to Children's Protective Services, Gonzalez has nine other children. CPS officials said they have possession of the six children between the ages of 10 months and 17 years old. The woman's other two children are adults.
All of the children lived in the apartment with their mother. One of the adult children also had four children, ages 2 months to 5 years old, who lived in the apartment.
