GALVESTON, Texas -

A man was driving drunk when he crashed into a horse-drawn carriage, killing one person and injuring four others, investigators said.

Police said Mike Grayson, 21, of Conroe, slammed his car into a horse-drawn carriage carrying four people at the intersection of 21st Street and Avenue L in Galveston about 11 p.m. Saturday. Officers said Grayson then tried to run from the scene, but a cab driver pinned him down until police could arrive.

"The carriage actually rolled over three times and the carriage was sitting on top of the car," witness Kenneth Young said.

Police said everyone in the carriage and one passenger in the vehicle had to be taken to the hospital. One of those victims, Bobby McKelvey, 57, later died.

McKelvey and his wife, Renee, were enjoying what was supposed to be a relaxing, romantic stroll in celebration of Renee McKelvey's birthday.

"I just can't imagine what they're going through right now," neighbor Annie Drachenberg said. "I just pray that time will heal this wound."

Bobby McKelvey owed a Sugar Land flooring company for more than 20 years. He operated it along with his two sons.

Police said Grayson failed a sobriety test, and later admitted he had been drinking. Investigators said Grayson stated he'd been on medication at the time of the accident. Grayson was taken to the hospital for a mandatory blood draw.

Officials said the horse suffered a cut to its left leg and was taken to a nearby veterinarian clinic.

Grayson was charged with one count of intoxication manslaughter and three counts of intoxication assault. Bond was set at $150,000.

Investigators said he was driving more than 100 mph at the time of the collision.
