HOUSTON -

A man died after plummeting some 30 feet off of an overpass after being hit by a suspected drunken driver.

The main lanes and the feeder road lanes of the North Freeway at West Road were shut down as crews worked the deadly accident scene Friday night.

Police said the incident happened around 8:30 p.m. on the southbound, right shoulder of the freeway.

Detectives said a man in his 20s was outside of his truck when a red pickup truck careened right into him from the rear .

The impact was so hard that the man flew over the edge of the highway overpass and he landed on the ground, detectives said.

The victim died from his injuries.

Detectives said the driver of the pickup jumped out of his truck and tried to make a run for it, but the 37-year-old suspect was apprehended by an off-duty deputy at a nearby Shell gas station.

He could face intoxication manslaughter charges.

A female passenger inside the victim's broken-down truck did not suffer any injuries. Investigators believe she is the victim's wife.
