TEXAS CITY, Texas -

Two men were shot as they stood outside a Texas City home, according to police.

Officers said the two men, both 31 years old, were standing in front of a house in the 2900 block of Vance around 7:15p.m.

Investigators said the men may have been visiting family members who live there. Police said a gray SUV drove up and someone inside opened fire on the men, hitting both in the back.

Neighbors said they heard five to ten gunshots.

"I was scared and surprised," said Benigna Bautista. "That doesn't happen on this street. It's usually normal quiet. Everything's calm."

Josh Calhoun came over to help the victims until police arrived.

"I ran down and saw the guy on ground," said Calhoun. "One other neighbor took his shirt off. I held his chest with the shirt to keep blood from coming out. Put pressure on it."

Detectives said one victim was taken by Life Flight to UTMB hospital. The second victim was rushed by ambulance to the same hospital.

Investigators said both men have life threatening injuries and need surgery.

Police are trying to determine what led to the shooting.
